Malawi Strengthens Pharmaceutical Regulation Through PMRA
A
AMRH Country Profile
African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation (AMRH)
The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA), formerly known as Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board (PMPB), is Malawi's pharmaceutical regulatory body established by an Act of 2019. The PMRA oversees the regulation of medicines and related substances for human and animal health in Malawi.
The regulatory mechanisms used by PMRA promote the availability and use of safe, quality medicines and medical devices in Malawi. The authority plays a critical role in ensuring that the Malawian population has access to quality-assured pharmaceutical products while maintaining rigorous safety standards.
Key PMRA Functions:
• Registration and licensing of medicines and medical devices
• Inspection and licensing of pharmaceutical premises
• Regulation of pharmacy practice and professionals
• Post-market surveillance and pharmacovigilance
• Clinical trial oversight and approval
• Quality control and laboratory testing
• Enforcement of pharmaceutical regulations
PMRA's Role in Regional Harmonisation:
As a member of the African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation (AMRH) initiative, PMRA actively participates in continental efforts to strengthen regulatory systems and harmonise pharmaceutical regulation across Africa. The authority collaborates with other National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) in the region and contributes to the development of harmonised guidelines and standards.
Capacity Building and Development:
PMRA continues to strengthen its technical capacity through partnerships with WHO, AUDA-NEPAD, and other international organisations. The authority has implemented modern regulatory systems and processes to improve efficiency and ensure compliance with international standards.
The transformation from PMPB to PMRA in 2019 represented a significant milestone in Malawi's pharmaceutical regulation, providing the authority with enhanced powers and resources to effectively regulate the pharmaceutical sector and protect public health.
